Soon after we arrived in La Paz, fellow cruisers alerted us to a very
small typical Mexican restaurant on Calle Nicolás Bravo, three blocks off the
Malecón: the LA FONDA Restaurant.
We arrived there and found a small restaurant with an ample and tropically
decorated back patio. We were greeted by its owner, Jorge Briceño, his wife
Silvia, his son Ricardo, and a smiling waiter, Cuco.
Jorge and Silvia are both lawyers. Silvia had been a local judge until there
was a shift during Mexican Party elections. They are wonderful people, and we
have become good friends.
Jorge
explained that their objective was to serve typical Mexican food, such as
typical Mexican families eat at home every day, at reasonable prices. If you
order the "comida corrida", or one of the specials they have cooked
for the day, the cost of the food ranges between $3 and $3.50 US, including Agua
de Jamaica, a delicious tea made out of the flower of an unusual variety of the
hyacinth flower.
After many visits to LA FONDA, always bringing new friends to this wonderful
place, the Briceño´s invited us to have dinner at their home. They have a
beautiful home, which Jorge designed, with lots of open spaces and an inside
fountain. There, we enjoyed lots of conversation and music.
We were invited to the Briceño´s yet again, and were asked to invite Pepe,
Sue, and Neil, amateur musicians and sailors, who had been playing blues tunes
at THE DOCK café, in Marina de La Paz.
