Below is the marketing letter used by Jack Van Ost and CSY Yachts, directed to interested prospects, explaining the concept of the Corsair 81', its most salient features, its status in production, and a proposed method to "get in the queue" and become a pioneer owner of one of these boats. The historical value of this letter is to show the vision Jack Van Ost had in anticipating the revival era of the luxury maxi sailboats.. I scanned the original letter and, through the technology of optical character recognition, converted into a Microsoft Word document.

We are delighted with your interest in the Corsair! The Corsair 81 is a design which meets the needs of those who might own or are considering owning a large power yacht. The realities of today's world make it inevitable that the days of such yachts are numbered. As far as we know, the Corsair 81 is the largest production sailing yacht in the world, a production yacht built to custom standards. Conceptually, there is no other yacht like it - combining the spacious interior of a power yacht with the fuel efficiency, the beauty, the seakindliness, and the world-wide range of a sailing yacht. It @ill be built by the CSY YACHT CORPORATION which already enjoys the reputation of building the finest production sailing yachts in the world. Enclosed is our booklet outlining our philosophy of boat building. We first introduced the idea of the Corsair 81 in the November, 1980 issue of Yachting. Our purpose was to determine if there was in. fact enough interest in such a yacht. The response has been overwhelming. The design for the yacht has gone through several stages of evolution. It is now finalized. However, we do realize that each owner will want to do some customizing, which we can accommodate as long as it does not involve basic changes in the design. We have a full time interior decorator who is at your service to work with you. The yacht is designed on five different levels. The lowest level under the main salon has a stand-up engine room which contains twin diesels with synchronizers, each using only 4 gallons per hour to maintain hull speed of over 10 knots under power alone. Also the engine room contains two 15 KW generators, each of which will use about I gallon per hour. The Corsair 81 will be provided with gyro-stabilizers. The yacht will be wired throughout with 110-volt electricity. A reverse osmosis water-maker which is run off the engine, will provide more adequate fresh water which is stored in tanks of 1,000 gallon capacity. Under power alone, the boat will have a range of well over 2,000 miles. The next level, four steps up from the engine room, contains crew's quarters forward for four - a captain, a cook and two crew-stewards. There are two bathrooms and showers and three cabins for the crew which are forward of a galley and dinette. The galley is all electric - stove, freezer, refrigerator, ice-maker, microwave oven and washer-dryer. The whole is designed for extended cruising, world-wide if you wish. Aft on the same level is the bedroom area. Here there is a choice of two layouts. The first contains 3 cabins - a large master bedroom with bathtub and a bathroom and two smaller bedrooms each with twin beds and a bathroom with a stall shower. An alternative is four cabins of the same size each with twin beds and a bathroom with a stall shower. This is more suitable for business or charter use. Forward and three steps p from the bedroom level is the large main salon with a formal dining room table and chairs to port and a library-entertainment center. The latter contains a wet bar and a complete hi-fi and intercom system which goes to all parts of the boat, plus a 3' x 5' television which has a Betamax or similar recording device. This in turn is connected to a dish antenna which brings programs in off the satellite. This same system allows communication via satellite with any one in the world. It also can be connected to a computer - stock market reports, weather reports, etc. This room can be decorated and furnished to your taste. Three steps up and-aft brings you to another level and another more informal salon. Like the main salon, it has windows all around. The forward part of this salon contains a complete array of navigation instruments and an indoor steering station with a chart table. The electronics will include an automatic pilot with course plotter, a satellite navigation system with a back-up, a Loran C., single-side band radio with back-up, VHF radio, CB, automatic direction finder, depth sounder, knotmeter and log, digital compass with gyroscope, in addition to a standard magnetic 'compass, radar, a complete satellite communication system, and weatherfax. This will reflect the latest and best electronic technology that is available today. The rest of the salon will be informal in character. It will contain a wet bar and a lavatory. The main entrance to the boat is through doors on either side of the steering station. Aft and up a few steps is the open bridge deck with stairways on both sides leading to the outside main deck level. This can be covered with canvas and enclosed with clear vinyl which can be rolled up in good weather. This area will be surrounded with seating with the outdoor helmsman station at the forward end of the deck. The spacious flush deck forward of the-main salon has seating forward of the salon house. There is a separate entrance from the deck to the crew's quarters, and there is room for a large motor launch. The Corsair 81 is to be ketch-rigged with double headsails with a basic sail area of 2,863 square feet. She will carry a full compliment of sails-including a mizzen, main, jib topsail and staysail as well as a mizzen staysail and a flasher. All the sails will be roller furling. The-motorized Hood furling system will be used for the main and mizzen. Electric self-tailing primary ,inches will be standard. All other winches will be self-tailing. The Corsair 81 will be a very large vessel - 81'5" overall - 67'9" at the water line - a 22' beam and 71 draft with centerboard up. It will weigh over 135,000 lbs. The designer of the Corsair 81 is Peter Schmitt, who has designed several large custom yachts while he was with the well-known designer, the late Bill Tripp. Peter has come up with a unique design which with modern design concepts and the advantages of fiberglass allows for spacious accommodations combined with elegant beauty both inside and out. The problem with too many large sailing yachts is that they aspire to be ocean racers which is incompatible with the spaciousness and the comfort and stability of a design like the Corsair 81. This is not to say the Corsair 81 is not a true sailboat - she will be an ocean greyhound easily attaining speeds of over 10 knots. She is all sailboat, but with twin engines and powerful bow thrusters, will have all the maneuverability of a power boat. In addition, CSY, LTD, our sister company, can, if you wish, provide you with a completely trained crew and will manage every detail of your yacht. CSY, LTD is the largest bareboat charterer in the world and has access to trained personnel and has the facilities and staff to train both the crew and the cooks. CSY, LTD can completely manage the yacht for you and move it for you to use anywhere in the world. If you wish to put your yacht into charter, we can handle that for you also. The response that we have already had indicates to us that the project is now to go forward with all due speed. Drawings are being completed. One of the most experienced people in the boat business has been brought in to head up the new custom division of the CSY YACHT CORPORATION, which will build the yacht. It is an immense job to do the drawings, complete the specifications and to cost out the yacht. We have guesstimated the cost at over $1,000.000. Until we have final costing, this is the best we can say. Cost is not going to be our guide. To build the best yacht that we can will be our only guide. We must have at least 12 firm contracts with deposits of $100,000 each before we start the project. This, after all, is a production yacht and we can only realize the economies of a production yacht if we can be assured of a regular supply of orders. We expect to build 10 to 12 per year which is a tall order, but the demand is there and we have both the know-how and the facilities to carry out the project. Therefore, if you are interested in being one of the first to buy a Corsair 81, we are asking you to send a check for $100,000 for each Corsair 81 you may want, made out to the XXXXXX Bank and Trust Company. This is to be sent to the attention of Mr. XXXX, vice President and Trust Officer at P. 0. Box XXXX, .Tampa, FL 33623. The telephone number is XXXX. This money is to be held in escrow until January 23, 1981. The money will be placed in a negotiated Certificate of Deposit which will be due on January 23, 1981. The cost for the bank's service is $200, which will be deducted from the interest. Enclosed is a signed escrow agreement. You are to send this with your check to the bank where it will be validated and returned to you. This will indicate to us that you are seriously interested. The most important thing that this does for you is to assign to you a priority number which establishes your priority for a building position assignment as contracts are signed. Priority numbers will be assigned in the order in which deposits are received. Between now and the first of the year, a complete set of plans, a signed lithograph of the new painting of the Corsair 81, a set of specifications and a contract with the cost and payment schedule will be forwarded to you for your signature. The first boat will not go into the water until late 1981. Each boat's cost will be raised by some mutually suitable index-for every boat thereafter to protect us against inflation, which is another very important reason to get your deposit in early. If, for any reason, the particulars which you will receive are not agreeable to you, your money will be returned with interest on January 23, 1981, when your Certificate of Deposit is due. If, on the other hand, you are agreeable to the terms and the yacht is acceptable to you, your signed contract will release your $1,000,000 plus interest to the CSY YACHT CORPORATION on January 23, 1981, and our commitment to build a yacht for you is firm. We need enough signed contracts to provide the funds for building the molds and the other expenses needed to prepare to build the boat and to build up the extensive inventory necessary to go into full blown production. This is one of the most exciting projects ever for the marine industry. We are looking forward to being a part of it and having you join with us. Together we shall be making marine history. Your CSY Yacht Advisor will be in touch with you shortly to answer any questions you might have.
With kindest personal regards,
John R. Van Ost, President CSY
